Trace5 in failure mode (red LED)

Causes:

  • Early production Trace5: Early Trace5 were shipped with a red LED instead of a green LED. In this case, besides the color, everything else should work fine. It is not a failure.

  • Failure mode: It is all about under voltage and undercurrent on the device external power supply. HW engineer and FW developers made an inspection and concluded, that BOR thresholds were suboptimal. FW was updated 2023 06 09 - 00.06.00.00 build 42.14, it should somewhat reduce a chance of failure happening. However, this does not eliminate issue completely. See below for more information.

Prevention:

  • Update FW to at least version 6.42.14.

  • Maintain proper installation conditions. Avoid under voltage and undercurrent on the device external power supply.

  • Maintain internal battery health. Do not exceed environmental operation and storage conditions.

Steps:

  1. When you find a device with solid/faint red LED

    1. disconnect it from power supply

    2. disconnect internal battery.

  2. Reconnect device to external power supply.

  3. If device starts, MCU is ok. Likely battery does not hold charge.

    1. Inspect main power supply, likely there are voltage drops.

    2. Replace internal battery.

  4. If device does not start and you still see solid/faint red LED, MCU failed.

    1. Proceed with RMA.
